In my current roll as CNC Programmer, I have a direct effect on the final product. It's exciting that my choices improve quality, cost, and efficiency. In the past, I ran a shop and went to CMM school. I put a high value on quality, documentation, and training. At Sigma Design, quality is held to a very high standard, while we innovate with new solutions. It's very exciting to be part of a winning combination of innovating and executing.
I have made the tiniest parts for the semiconductor industry, to an elephant tusk extractor for the Oregon Zoo. In 39 years in a machine shop, A few of the industries I have made parts for are, the clean room - semiconductor test, laser, medical (human and vet), marine, automotive, locomotive, audio, and aerospace tooling industries. It never gets old to see something new, or train someone about something they have never seen before.

Questions & Answers
How do you make people laugh?
Everyone seems to appreciate a good "Dad joke"! Some machinists can be introverted/focused on their task. This can make it difficult to break through. Thankfully, I speak machinist. I enjoy talking to machinists about new parts, as well as what is happening in their lives. There is usually something to have fun with as stuff is being built.
If you were a tool or piece of equipment, what would you be and why?
I love tools. If I had to choose one, it would be the space shuttle. I went to the California Science center a few years ago and was able to walk under the Endeavour. It made a huge impression on me. It was awe inspiring.
What's your favorite productivity hack or time-saving trick?
The use of templates reduces redundant work. I can start a part with a template to save on duplicating information when making a CNC program and setup information. This keeps the information consistent from part to part. This also improves the machinists workflow.
